Gannets Diving Continually for 1 Hour
This is a new workshop for 2014. We will not be landing on Bass Rock on this trip. It has been designed for those photographers who want more chances to capture the spectacular diving of the Gannets as they enter the water with bullet-like precision. We will take enough fish with us to enable the crew to continually throw fish into the sea for an hour. You should witness literally thousands of dives in that time. You will not be able to photograph them all, but you will undoubtedly photograph a considerable number.
Amazing Spectacle provided by the Gannets Diving into the Sea
You will be amazed by the different shots that the diving Gannets will provide. Some begin their dive from quite high and fold their wings tight to their body. They look just like Concorde as they enter the water almost vertically. Some hover above the boat and tip sideways before making their dive. Others enter the water at a lesser angle. There is a huge variety of different dives to witness. The sea will often become a foaming mass as large numbers of Gannets dive in at the same time as others are emerging from the waters below. Some of the birds taking off will provide shots that are just as spectacular as the ones of the birds diving in.
Three Hour Trip
The trip will take approximately three hours. We depart from Dunbar harbour and our journey to Bass Rock will take approximately 50 minutes each way. We will circumnavigate Bass Rock for 15 – 20 minutes and then spend a whole hour photographing the birds diving into the sea just a few feet from the boat. This will probably be the most intensive one hour’s photography that you have ever undertaken.
Wonderful Feedback from Clients
2014 was our first year of running this trip. It was an exclusive trip that no other company had undertaken before. Our clients were absolutely amazed at the opportunities that this trip provided, and many have repeated this trip in following years. That is a true measure of how good it was. It is impossible to count the number of dives that occurred within a few metres of the boat, but it was estimated to be well over a thousand in our one hour’s photography session. This is an early departure to enable us to photograph in the softer early morning light.
Tuition
I have learned the best techniques to get sharp pictures of the Diving Gannets over the last few years of running trips to Bass Rock. All these will be explained prior to embarkation in Dunbar. The birds will dive just a few meters away from the boat so long lenses are not required. Anything from 16mm to 200mm will be ideal, depending on what sort of shot you are after.
