New Venue for 2021/2022
Photographers on Safari have found a brand-new location for this workshop. We have already had clients attend this location who had previously attended the old one. They have been amazed by the different opportunities here. All the photos displayed on this page and in the gallery are from the new site. The photographs that you will take have very different backgrounds to the previous workshops. We can shoot from many different levels and can include or exclude the sky with ease. We are now including (subject to availability) a Kestrel in this workshop. We have developed a setting and technique where you will be able to take photos of a Kestrel in flight. This has been an extremely difficult task in the past and very few photographers have achieved sharp shots of a flying Kestrel. We have also created some great authentic set-ups inside an old barn for the Barn Owl.
Birds of Prey Photography in Action
Photographers on Safari have come up with a fantastic day’s photography watching and photographing a Golden Eagle in some wonderful natural settings. We have found some superb places to photograph these magnificent birds while hiding their jesses whenever possible. We will also fly the birds for short distances to give you the opportunity of some great flying shots.
Golden Eagle
A Golden Eagle will weigh up to 15 pounds, grow up to 3 feet tall and will have a wingspan of up to 7 feet. They are solitary birds, live for 40 to 50 years, and being great hunters they rarely eat carrion. You cannot fail to feel most privileged to have a bird of this size and stature flying freely just a few feet away from you.
Tips & Tuition
As with all our photography workshops, the day will commence with a short explanation of how best to photograph birds, both in flight and while perched. One to one advice will be available throughout the day and the relevant techniques will be explained at each new location.
Small Group Size
There will be a maximum of just eight photographers. This will enable you to get all the close-up shots you want without jostling for position. Quite a rare event in itself.
Close-up Photos
We will photograph the Eagles from different distances to give you a variety of shots. You will be able to get really close to the birds and a wide angle lens will be great for these photos.
Fantastic Countryside Setting
We have access to 24 acres of farmland. It is a beautiful area and the land is ancient ridge and furrow pasture. This means that we can use the varying heights of the ground to create different backgrounds to suit all situations. There are always areas that are sheltered from the wind and the different backdrops really show off the birds. We use a tree with a hollow trunk for one setting for the Barn Owl. We will also fly the Barn Owl with a mouse in its beak. This is a shot that always has huge appeal to photographers.
Photograph Birds with their Prey
At the end of the day we will photograph the birds eating road-kill. We will find a really attractive setting for this final event, and you should be certain to go home with some stunning pictures of these magnificent birds.
Other Birds of Prey Available
Our falconer also has a number of other birds of prey. If the group decide they would like to photograph more than just Eagles, then he will bring a selection of these after lunch. One thing is certain, whatever subjects he brings, you should leave with some stunning photographs. A choice will be made from the following birds. A Kestrel, a European Eagle Owl, a Barn Owl, an American Red Tailed Hawk, a European Great Grey Owl, and also – when available – a gorgeous Goshawk.
